I teach digital photography courses in Oxford at The Ashmolean Museum, which is an inspiring place to learn photography.
Two courses are currently offered: Digital Photography : Beginners and Digital Photography : Intermediate
The courses each run for 6 weeks, and whilst they can be taken on their own, they are designed and scheduled to run back-to-back, so that a student can immerse themselves in 12 weeks of quality tuition and shooting.
The Beginners course focusses on the camera, and how to master its many functions and creative tools to produce great shots. The Intermediates class continues this learning, but with a greater emphasis on what you do with your images when you've taken them off the camera, including how to create a proper colour-managed digital workflow, and how to make the most of the images using Adobe Photoshop Elements.
The courses are for photographers owning a digital SLR camera (most easily distinguished from compact cameras by the fact that SLRs have removable and interchangeable lenses, and you look through a viewfinder to compose the image, rather than at a screen)
Class sizes are limited to 10 students. There is a strong emphasis on student participation, and as there really is no substitute for taking pictures, pictures and then some more pictures, weekly shooting assignments are integral to each course.
Digital Photography : Beginners
The course assumes no prior knowledge, and will start with the basic and essential photographic principles that form the bedrock of any photographer's practise. Students will learn how to use aperture and shutter speed creatively, how to achieve correct exposure, rules of composition, and how the multitude of settings on modern digital cameras can be used to help them get the perfect shot. Weekly assignments will embed that week's learning in the student's practise, and each class will start with a group review of work.
Students must own a digital SLR camera.
Upcoming course dates:
2-day workshop, Tues/Fri July 27th/30th, 10:30 - 17:30, £130

Thurs (10:30am - 12:30pm), Nov 11th - Dec 16th, £150
Digital Photography : Intermediate
Designed for those who have completed the Digital Photography : Beginners course, and other photographers who already have a good understanding of how to use their digital SLR cameras but want to take their photography on to the next level. Weekly assignments will focus on the theory and skills required to shoot different subjects such as portraits, architecture, and landscape, and each class will start with a review of work. There will be a greater focus on the processing and post-production of images, including shooting and processing RAW files, the importance of having a colour-managed digital workflow in place for your images, and how to make important adjustments to images in Photoshop Elements. The best work shot by students will form an exhibition to be displayed in situ following the end of the course.
Students must own a digital SLR camera and are recommended to purchase Adobe Photoshop Elements 8.
Upcoming course dates:
Wed (10:30am - 12:30pm), Oct 6th - Nov 10th, £150
