I have a range of courses and other activities going on in and around Oxford for people wanting to learn more about using their digital SLR cameras.

I run a Beginners and an Intermediates DSLR course, monthly assignment meetings, and occasional guided shooting days in interesting locations. For the moment, the assignment meetings are only open to those who've done a course with me first.

Courses

The courses are open to photographers owning a digital SLR camera, and class sizes are limited to 12 students, which is an essential element of their continued success. We pack lots of learning into each course, but the classes are also relaxed and fun, questions are encouraged, and most importantly you'll be taking lots of pictures as part of each week's shooting assignment.

The Beginners course is open to all, and focusses on learning your camera's essential controls, and how to use those controls to be creative with your photography. Digital SLRs can be intimidating things nowadays, but we'll go through step-by-step so that you feel comfortable with taking it out of Auto mode, and starting to develop and realise your photographic vision.

The Intermediates course carries on from here by looking at the particular skills and techniques required to shoot different subjects and styles of photography, as well as considering how you should organise your image collection, and learning how best to use Photoshop to improve your images.

Whilst each course can be taken successfully on its own, they are designed so that a student can immerse themselves in a longer run of quality tuition and shooting.

Monthly Assignment Meet-up

For students who have already completed one of these courses we have a monthly assignment meet-up, on the first Monday of the month. In fact there are two meetings to choose from - one at lunchtime, and the other in the evening.

These are designed to give you a focus for your photography each month, and get you out shooting when you might be tempted not to! Everyone attending can submit one image in response to the assignment brief, as well as one other image they've taken in the previous two months, on any subject. There is a vote at each meeting for the best assignment images.

Guided Shooting Days

These are an opportunity for a small group of photographers to spend a fun day in an interesting location, carrying out a series of photo assignments. Becoming a better photographer is all about taking lots of pictures, and spending time reviewing them. I'll be on hand to offer advice, and we'll have a review of each other's work to see what we can learn.
