Digital SLR Photography : Intermediates

This course sets off where the Beginners course ended, and so is designed for those who've completed that course, as well as other photographers who already have a solid understanding of how to use their digital SLR cameras (*see below).
Classes are 3 hours long, with a short break in the middle, unlike the 2 hour Beginners classes, giving us the necessary time to cover lots of material without being hurried.
Each week we will be exploring a different area of photography, including landscape, night-time, architecture, portraiture, documentary and still-life.
We'll be looking at how it has been done right by other photographers, with lots of examples from the past and the present, and thinking about the technical issues that surround each type of photography. This will help us to better appreciate the ways in which we use our camera's settings to achieve specific results.
Our assignments each week will then challenge us to create our own examples, and so carry on the learning process that we started in the Beginners course whereby we get to apply our technical knowledge to different subject matters, examine the results of our efforts, and see what has worked, what maybe hasn't, and why.
In addition to this, there will be a portion of each class spent looking at what we do with our images once they are on our computers. It is essential that we organise, edit and keyword all our best images, so that we feel in control of our image collection, and can find and make use of specific images when we want to. We will be doing this with Adobe Organizer, part of the Adobe Photoshop Elements 9/10 software package.
As well as getting this digital workflow in place, we will also look at how we can use Photoshop Elements to retouch our images. You'll be shown different techniques each week, and will be given specific images to try the techniques out on at home. Retouching of assignment pictures is also allowed, but we take a look at both the original and the retouched pictures in class. And when the opportunity presents itself there'll be time for us to retouch the odd assignment photo in class and look at how improvements could have been made.
Maximum 12 students per course
Students must own a digital SLR camera. If you are unsure whether your camera is an SLR, please email me its make and model for verification.
*Course eligibility: If you haven't done the Beginners course, then to be eligible for the Intermediates course, as a minimum, you must be comfortable with using your camera in Aperture Priority and Shutter Priority mode, and be clear about how to use aperture to vary depth of field, and shutter speed to freeze or show movement in your subjects. You should also understand how to gauge whether your shot is over- or under-exposed, and be able to use exposure compensation and/or bracketing to achieve the correct exposure. And finally be clear about when you would change your ISO settings.
Upcoming course dates:
The next set of Intermediates classes will be in the early Autumn 2012, due to work commitments.
PLEASE EMAIL ME TO BE NOTIFIED WHEN NEW COURSE DATES ARE ADDED.
